Gut microbiota-derived extracellular vesicles have been reported to regulate inflammatory responses. Extracellular vesicles are emerging as a new weapon that can compromise host cellular functions and subvert host defenses. They achieve this by directly delivering bacterial virulence factors into host cells, such as DNA, RNA, proteins, and lipids. Considering the crucial role of the colonic epithelium in host-microbe interactions and the disruption of the epithelial barrier that contributes to IBD, we employed in vitro assays to assess the altered epithelial barrier function and inflammatory responses of epithelial cells following microbiota-derived extracellular vesicles intervention.
