The deep biosphere encompasses the sub-sea floor ecosystems and the terrestrial subsurface ecosystems, thereby constituting the largest biome in terms of volume. Elevated pressure is one of the many thermodynamic and physical constraints that microorganisms within the deep biosphere encounter.Our understanding of piezophilic adaption has been mostly derived from work on psychrophilic piezophilic bacteria isolated from deep ocean trenches. The present study describes the isolation of a Thermococcus sp. strain 175 from the world‘s deepest hydrothermal vent sites known thus far – The Mid-Cayman Rise and its relevance to pressure.
