Basic principles of modern science were presented to scores of Los Angeles high school youths yesterday at the University of Southern California. The occasion was an open house program given by the University's chemistry department and sponsored by the student affiliate of the American Chemical Society. Demonstrations included one by Dr. Karol J. Mysels on the utilization of liquid air during which he startled prospective students by 'smoking' a liquid oxygen-soaked cigar in a matter of seconds. Later, he smashed a rubber ball to bits with a hammer and drove a small piece of rubber into a block of wood like a nail. Both had been 'frozen' by liquid air. W.L. Korst, graduate student in the department, and a glass blowing exhibition by Robert Greiner. Dr. Harold Miller, of the SC School of Medicine, delivered a lecture on 'Chemicals and Their Relationship to Medicine', supplemented by a film on cardiac surgery. Dr. James C. Warf, assistant professor of chemistry, was in charge of the program".
