Beauty is Pain: Uncovering the Hidden Scars from Energy-based Cosmetic Treatments in Australia

Energy-based cosmetic treatments - such as laser, intense pulsed light and ultrasound - are increasingly popular in Australia. However, our understanding of consumer experiences is limited, particularly regarding the adverse effects that may occur following treatment. My PhD aims to explore injuries and adverse effects from these treatments in Australia, and to identify and characterise the circumstances in which they occur. Findings will support the development of evidence-informed regulatory recommendations aimed at enhancing safety, improving treatment standards and strengthening consumer protections in Australia.
