Following a successful, one-day, proof-of-concept experiment to characterize the system, we request time for an ISIS/RHUL facility development PhD student: Humic material silanized onto silica blocks will be oxidised at the water-mineral interface using aqueous ozone. The kinetics of the reaction are critical in the assessment of the atmospheric lifetime of HUmic-Like Substances (HULIS) being cloud-processed on atmospheric mineral aerosol. Film thickness measurements will allow radiative-transfer assessment of top-of-atmosphere heating to be calculated for cloud processing. The experiments will incorporate a new fibre-optic launched UV-Vis solid-liquid cell to measure the concentration of oxidant within the cell. The experiment is for a NERC grant joint between ISIS and RHUL. The proof-of-concept demonstrated we can make the films and now we ask for time to perform the original proposal
