Near-term forecast of Austrian greenhouse gas emissions for 2020 (Nowcast 2021).

According to preliminary figures, around 73.7 million tonnes of greenhouse gases were emitted in Austria in 2020. Compared to 2019, this represents a decrease of 7.7% or 6.2 million CO2 equivalent. The global coronavirus pandemic in particular reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector by around 14%. Emissions trading showed declines in steel production and electricity production from natural gas and coal. Emissions from the remaining sectors remained close to similar levels. Overall, the preliminary figures for the non-ETS sectors show emissions of approximately 46.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2020. This is below the maximum quantity for 2020 by 1.2 million tonnes and also ensures the achievement of the target over the entire period 2013-2020.
