A process for fractionating biomass based materials is disclosed. This process includes evaporating the evaporable portion of the biomass based material 104 in the short range evaporator SPE 105 to produce a depitched hard portion 106 and heavier pitch portion 107 in liquid form. do. The de-pitted hard portion 106 may include de-pitched tall oil in liquid form， and the heavier pitch portion 107 may include tall oil pitch TOP.
