Genetics of wing pigment patterning in rock pigeon

The goal of this study is to understand the genetic basis of pigment patterning in vertebrates. Pigment patterning (stripes, spots, dark and light regions, etc.) has important roles in many species, including camouflage, species recognition, communication, and mate choice. We are using the pigeon to understand aspects of patterning because this species has a variety of pigment patterns on it wing feathers. The genes involved in pigment patterning in vertebrates are largely unknown, so this study provides new information about a fundamental process in vertebrate evolution.
