The text, in Ottoman Turkish, gives details about the life of the deceased, stating that he was a former harbour master who worked faithfully for the Ottoman state for sixty years. When he retired, the sultan attached him to the imperial Ottoman Navy to fight against the Greeks during the Greek War of Independence. He was killed in battle in 1823. His headdress is a type of turban known as makdem, worn by those in naval professions.
