Workers on the landing operate the derrick which is swung out over a small rowboat and from which is hanging a passenger being moved. Steamers were anchored out in the ocean on account of the rocky coast. All freight and passengers were brought in and taken out in small boats which were landed by being swung out on the derricks. Honolulu and Hilo were the only harbors on any of the islands.
