Aggregated dataset for: Self-reported state empathy in response to video stimuli — Comparing the measurement characteristics of cognitive and affective empathy

This dataset contains aggregated data from a study investigating the measurementcharacteristics of an 8-item self-reported state empathy scale for video stimuli,which comprises 4 cognitive empathy (CE) items and 4 affective empathy (AE) items. Ten Japanese-speaking adults responded to 24 video stimuli from the NTT EmpathyEliciting Video Stimulus Database (EMPAC; Ota et al., 2023), yielding 240 trial-levelobservations. For each trial, participants rated (a) the character's emotion profileon 6 emotion categories, (b) their own emotion profile on the same 6 categories,(c) the IOS (Inclusion of Other in the Self) scale, and (d) 4 CE items (SE1-SE4)and 4 AE items (SE5-SE8) on a 7-point Likert scale. To protect participant privacy, individual trial-level data are not publicly shared.This dataset provides aggregated data at the video level (n=10 per video) and atthe emotion category level (n=40 per category), along with full correlation matrices,variance decomposition results, and item-level descriptive statistics. These aresufficient to reproduce all key statistics reported in the associated manuscript.
