VPRS 12182 Register of Various Reports

Established in 1856 the functions of Victorias public library have been to provide reference and research library services in its own building and a support service to municipal libraries. Historically this agency has been known as the Melbourne Public Library (1856-1869) and the Public Library of Victoria (1869-1960). Since 1960 the Library has been referred to as the State Library of Victoria.This series is a register of various reports that the Public Library received during the years 1864-1946 from societies and institutes within Victoria. These reports registered included annual reports, progress reports and accounting reports.Under the provisions of the Library Museums and National Gallery Act 1869 and subsequent acts, the trustees were required to annually report the proceedings of the corporation during the previous year to the Chief Secretary. This included the recording of new publications that came into the custody of the Public Library.The Register of Various Reports would have formed part of the acquisition section of the Library.
