The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities included roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply.Most of the work of the Department was done by the contract system with individuals and businesses being invited to tender for contracts. This series records the tenders received for contracts to be let by the Department. Details include the dates of appearance of the original advertisements and the award of the contract in the Government Gazette, the names of tenderers and the amounts of their tender and as additional details the major contract or the Vote or allocation of funds to which a particular contract related.
