Patients asymptomatically colonized by C. difficile are thought to play a role in the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infections (CDI). Patients who are colonized on admission can spread the bacterium to other patients, who might eventually develop CDI. The relatedness between strains of asymptomatic carriers and CDI patients can indicate how many of the new CDI cases should be attributed to spread from asymptomatic carriers.
