Interview Coding Dataset for "Exploring the Reality of Women in Software Engineering: A Look at Their Experiences and Perceptions of Career Success"

This record provides the interview coding and analytical synthesis spreadsheet developed as part of the undergraduate thesis Exploring the Reality of Women in Software Engineering: A Look at Their Experiences and Perceptions of Career Success, conducted by Ana Júlia Mendes Santos and Júlia Rocha Fortunato. The dataset documents the qualitative analysis of interviews conducted with women working in Software Engineering. The coding addresses topics such as entry into the field, professional trajectories, workplace experiences, gender-related barriers, support mechanisms, perceptions of career progression and success, and future professional goals. The current version of the spreadsheet contains data from three participants, identified by the codes I01, I02, and I03. Spreadsheet structure The spreadsheet is organized into three sheets: 1. Data Coding This sheet contains the main coding of the interview data. Its structure follows the interview guide and the research objectives and is divided into five main sections: interviewee identification and background; path to a career in Software Engineering; experiences working in Software Engineering; experiences related to being a woman in Software Engineering; future goals and advice for women entering the field. The cells contain analytical summaries, selected interview excerpts, identified barriers, support mechanisms, perceptions of career progression, and other relevant information obtained during the interviews. Some excerpts are highlighted using different colors. Each color represents an experience category defined in the “Categories - Experience” sheet. 2. Categories - Experience This sheet presents the experience categories identified during the coding process and the color assigned to each category. The colors serve as a legend for interpreting the highlighted excerpts in the “Data Coding” sheet. The categories include experiences related to aspects of women’s reality in Software Engineering. 3. Career Perception This sheet presents an analytical synthesis of each participant’s perception of her professional trajectory and career success. The data are organized into four dimensions: career perception and professional recognition; career barriers and gender inequalities; work-life and personal impacts; support, persistence, and future goals. Ethical considerations and pseudonymization The participants’ real names were replaced with pseudonyms, and each participant was assigned an identification code, such as I01, I02, or I03. The dataset should be used in a manner that respects the participants’ privacy and confidentiality. No attempt should be made to identify or re-identify any participant based on the information contained in the spreadsheet. The collection, analysis, and dissemination of the data followed the ethical procedures and informed consent requirements established for the research.
