TheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI)isacrosscuttingFederalprogramdesignedtocoordinateU.S.investmentinresearchanddevelopment(R&D)activitiesinnanoscalescience,engineering,technology,andrelatedeffortsacross25agenciesandprograms.ThisisthefourthreviewoftheNNIbythePresident’sCouncilofAdvisorsonScienceandTechnology(PCAST)sincethecouncilwasdesignatedin2004astheNationalNanotechnologyAdvisoryPaneltaskedwithreviewingtheinitiative.TheFederalGovernmenthasproposed$1.8billionoffundinginfiscalyear(FY)2013for15agencieswithbudgetsdedicatedtonanotechnologyresearchanddevelopment.TheFY2013requestwillrepresenttotalfundingof$18billionoverthelifeoftheInitiative.Nearly75percentofthisfundinggoestothreeProgramComponentAreas:FundamentalNanoscalePhenomenaandProcesses,Nanomaterials,andNanoscaleDevicesandSystems.TheNNIcontinuestosupportastrongandgrowingportfolioofresearchonthesocietalimplicationsofnanotechnology,nanotechnologyeducation,andpublicoutreach.ThePresident’s2013budgetincludesatotalof$306million—a24-percentincreasecomparedto2011actualspending—forthreeNanotechnologySignatureInitiatives:NanotechnologyforSolarEnergyCollectionandConversion;SustainableNanomanufacturing:CreatingtheIndustriesoftheFuture;andNanoelectronicsfor2020andBeyond.Theseinitiativesfostermeaningfulinteragencycollaborationandserveasspringboardsfortherapidadvancementofnanoscienceandtechnologytowardcommercialization.
