Multiferroic phase of CuO toward room temperature in high pressure above 10 GPa

We propose to perform neutron diffraction experiment under high pressure condition, using a single crystal of CuO. This monoxide is known as a multiferroic compound with high Tc (~ 230 K). Recently, we have succeeded in measuring the magnetic Bragg reflections up to 8.0 GPa on WISH. We found that the Tc linearly increases from ambient pressure value and reaches 257 K at 8.0 GPa. (RB 1920114) Extrapolating the Tc value to higher pressure region, we anticipate that the multiferroic phase transition temperature can reach room temperature at ~18 GPa. In this work, we would like to extend the pressure region from 8.0 GPa to 25 GPa by the neutron diffraction experiment with Paris-Edinburgh press on WISH.
