Floristic surveys, vegetation mapping, soil animals and environmental parameters for algae growth at Cape Bird

A plant map for Keble Valley was produced and the water channels plotted to determine the factors involved in moss establishment and growth. Water and shelter were found to be the main factors. Temperature and nitrogen profiles were examined in this area. Weather data was recorded including wind, visibility, temperature and pressure. Preliminary micrometeorological observations of soil temperature were taken. Moss samples were taken and the % organic matter and ash content/weight was measured. Samples were also analysed by Kjeldahl analysis and x-ray elemental analysis. Mosses were attempted to be cultured to reduce the need for collection in the field and to conduct hormonal, cytogenetical and physiological studies. Temperature, pH, moisture and nitrogen data was collected across the melt water stream below Solibers Roost to determine patterns of algal growth. General observations of red-brown algal felts cover from year to year was recorded. Collembolans and mites on water surfaces and underneath damp rocks were collected, dried and weighed. The samples were analysed by Kjeldahl for nitrogen content.
