In January 2001 the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute realized that the high water flow in the river Gota Alv, the entrance to Gothenburg, during autumn year 2000 and expected high flow in spring year 2001 may exert an influence on the sea, i.e. the Kattegat and the Skagerrak. SMHI, The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvardsverket) and the Water Quality Association of the Bohus Coast (Bohuskustens Vattenvardsforbund) co-funded an investigation of possible effects in the area relatively close to the river mouth. The investigation started in February and ended in the beginning of June. The analysis comprises nutrients, chlorophyll a, quantitative phytoplankton, solar radiation and primary productivity. Data on nutrient concentrations in rivers was made available from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet).
