Warburgia species have been over-exploited by collectors in African countries due to its traditional medicinal uses for the treatment of cold, cough and sore throat, fever, gastro-intestinal disorders, malaria, respiratory and abdominal problems. Also, the natural habitat that these species inhabit is currently under threat of destruction due to clearing for farming and timber harvesting. The use of the biopharming method to produce the target proteins for a wide range of bioactive compounds through gene expression would alleviate the harvesting pressure of the plant species in its habitat as low amounts of these compounds are produced in the native plant.
