According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a protected area is "a clearly defined, recognised, dedicated and managed geographical area, by any effective legal or other means, in order to ensure the long-term conservation of nature and the ecosystem services and cultural values associated with it". The designation of protected natural areas is a major component of natural heritage protection and management strategies. As such, there are various protection tools in France whose diversity reflects the multiplicity of actors, objectives and types of management.
