Dynamically changing signals, such as dynamic light, demand a rapid response from the organism; achieving this type of extreme rapid response is only possible by directly altering of fundamental processes in the organism; as a result, these rapid responses have high pleiotropic cost and when no longer needed are lost over evolutionary time. Grass species are found in all possible light environments, everywhere from open plains to rainforests and will enable a deep grass genome X environment association study.
