ZmEMF1a inhibits early endosperm cellularization and cell proliferation by mediated H3K27me3 deposition at the MADS and ZmBBM loci. Additionally, it also hinders the over-proliferation of aleurone layer (AL) and basal endosperm transfer layer (BETL) cells during grain filling, and facilitating the normal differentiation of late endosperm tissue in maize kernel development.
