Previous research demonstrates that emotions play a critical role in goal
pursuit and achievement. However, this research assumes that the explicit
emotions that individuals report accurately reflect the implicit affective
experiences that underlie the motivation of individuals. In addition, past work
assumes that all individuals experience the same pre and post goal-related
emotion, despite individual differences in the ability to regulate emotion and
behaviour (Kuhl, 1994). The present research challenges these assumptions. Specifically,
pre-goal and post-goal states are
manipulated through participants’ reflections on their idiographic goals, and
both explicit (the Positive and Negative Affect Test (PANAS)) and implicit measures (the Implicit Positive and Negative Affect Test (IPANAT)) of affect were used to examine closely the affective
associates of pre-goal and post-goal states.
