Bloodstream infections cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, yet current antibiotic susceptibility testing requires 48-72 hours from blood culture positivity to result. During this delay, patients receive empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics that may be ineffective against resistant pathogens or unnecessarily broad for susceptible ones. This research develops a rapid susceptibility testing platform capable of delivering actionable results within hours rather than days - enabling earlier transition to targeted therapy, confident de-escalation from broad-spectrum regimens, and reduced unnecessary exposure to last-line agents like carbapenems and glycopeptides.
Access to the ATLAS dataset would allow us to validate the platform against the global diversity of resistance phenotypes encountered in clinical practice, ensuring reliable detection of the resistance patterns most relevant to stewardship decisions across geographic regions. This validation is essential for developing a platform that can strengthen surveillance infrastructure and expand access to timely susceptibility testing beyond reference laboratories, particularly in resource-limited settings where resistance burdens are highest.
