Springhead, ARC SPH 95

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Union Railways Limited to carry out an archaeological evaluation on a site to the south-west of Gravesend (centred on URL grid point 41750 52750; NGR grid point TQ 61700 72800), known as Springhead. The potential for archaeological remains within the evaluation area had been identified by an earlier Environmental Statement (URL 1994). This potential was defined as prehistoric finds scatters and the possible remains of a small Roman town with a unique complex of temples part of which, including an area adjacent to the construction site south of the A2, is a scheduled monument.
