Bacterial community of Ire-Akari Iron Market soil, Igando, Lagos, Nigeria

Iron markets are common features of Lagos metropolis. They are characterised by extensive human activities ear-marked by unregulated deposition of iron filings and other related waste. The impact of these wastes is palpable in the physical deterioration of the soil and accumulation of rusted and corroded clump of soil and metal aggregates. However, there is little or no study on the physicochemistry and microbial communities of the soil, the pollution indices and the overall effect on soil health and surrounding matrices, including underground water and adjoining soils. this study was therefore set up to determine the physicochemistry, heavy metal content and microbial community structure of soil impacted by iron filings within the vicinity of Ire-Akari iron Market in Igando, Lagos State, Nigeria. Next generation sequencing (NGS) metagenomic approach was used for the bacterial community study.
