The Subtext of Pragmatism — When "It Works" Becomes an Excuse to Stop Questioning

"Pragmatism" in scientific discourse is often used as a humble self-description — we only care whether a theory works, not whether its foundations are consistent. This paper points out that this self-description is incomplete. In the actual practice of mainstream physics, "pragmatism" has evolved into a systematic strategy of avoidance: it is used to justify unannounced premise switches, to provide excuses for deferring unexplained phenomena, and to legitimize the protection of established authority structures. This paper does not oppose pragmatism itself, but argues that its current usage has deviated from its original meaning and has become a rhetorical cover for the termination of questioning. We dismantle four subtexts of pragmatism: premise switches do not need to be declared, consistency problems can be set aside, questioning foundations is "unprofessional," and authority structures should not be challenged. This paper concludes that when pragmatism is used to prohibit questioning, it is no longer a methodology but a dogma.
