This paper describes a new deployable MetaLens concept for use in future spaceborne Earth Science radar to study the Earth’s Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL). The key to this design is a multilayer artificial dielectric Gradient Index (GRIN) lens which is realized as a stackup of tensioned polyimide layers, each of which supports a photoetched pattern of circular disks. A new lens design synthesis algorithm has been developed to handle the computational challenge of this design process. Initial test results for a 20 cm diameter Ka-band demonstration lens show very good performance. A G-Band breadboard lens indicates that the design is practical to build at 175 GHz.
