Gyaring Lake (alternatively named Chaling Sea; in Tibetan, it is called Cuojialang, literally meaning 'gray-white lake') is situated in the Yellow River valley within Maduo County, Qinghai Province, and is a freshwater lake with both inflow and outflow. The naming origin of Cuojialang lies in the fact that when the Yellow River carries large volumes of sediment into the lake and wind waves stir up the water, the lake surface takes on a gray-white hue. Prior to the Middle Pleistocene, Gyaring Lake formed a single contiguous lake with Ngoring Lake. The two lakes fully separated into sister lakes during the Late Pleistocene. Historically, there were debates regarding their naming convention, with two proposals: 'Zha Xi E Dong' and 'Zha Dong E Xi'. In 1997, the State Council of the People's Republic of China officially standardized their names as 'Xi Zha Dong E'. Geographically, Gyaring Lake spans latitudes 34°49′08″N to 35°01′37″N and longitudes 97°01′27″E to 97°30′04″E. The lake basin has an asymmetric rhombic morphology, surrounded by mountainous terrain on all sides. The lake beaches along the northern and southern shores are wide and gently sloped, while the eastern shore is steep. There are 11 islands within Gyaring Lake. Three islands located in the northwest corner of the lake are aligned linearly from north to south, collectively referred to as the 'West Three Islands'. Since over 60 white-lipped deer inhabit these islands, they are also known as the 'Deer Islands'. Among the West Three Islands, the northern island is the largest in the lake, with an area of 1.35 km² and a shoreline length of 5.18 km; the middle island covers an area of 0.86 km² with a shoreline length of 4.28 km; the southern island has an area of 0.41 km² and a shoreline length of 2.60 km. The catchment area of Gyaring Lake is 542.33 km², the total shoreline length is 232.20 km, and the lake surface elevation is 4293 m. This dataset was developed using Google Earth remote sensing satellite imagery from 2015 and relevant topographic maps. The dataset is stored in .kmz and shp formats, comprising 22 individual files with a total size of 6.69 MB (compressed into 2 files with a total size of 2.29 MB).
