Main Information of the Data Product The Catalog of Chinese Genealogies (hereinafter referred to as the "Catalog") dataset has a total of 12 million words, comprising 10 volumes, and contains 52,401 entries of Chinese genealogies collected from domestic and overseas institutions and private collections, covering 608 distinct surnames. Multiple indexes are appended after the main body of the catalog to facilitate readers' access and utilization. The Catalog is the largest catalog of Chinese genealogies to date in terms of the number of entries, covered surnames and participating compiling institutions, representing a landmark achievement in the field of Chinese genealogical bibliography. The compilation of the Catalog was led by Shanghai Library as the chief editor, with the assistance of over a thousand major domestic and overseas genealogical collection institutions and private genealogical collectors. Following standardized description rules, it compiled a union catalog with content abstracts covering Chinese genealogies collected by public institutions such as libraries, museums, archives at all levels, private collection institutions, overseas collection institutions and individual collectors, based on nine specific description fields: title field, responsible party field, edition field, physical description field, notes field, notable ancestors field, binding field, collector field, and remarks field. The data processing period of the Catalog dataset spanned from May 2001 to December 2008, lasting 7 years. Application Scenarios of the Data Product The Catalog dataset can be utilized for research in disciplines including history, economics, sociology, ethnology, cultural anthropology, eugenics, and others. For historical research, the lineages, biographies, general studies, charitable estates, ancestral halls and other content recorded in genealogies can reflect, through specific cases, the family history, demographic history, historical figures, history of the lower classes, women's history, religious history and other aspects of a nation. In terms of economic research, it can also reveal a side of social and economic development of a certain era through the economic changes and rise and fall of a single family. For example, the Huizhou genealogies in the special collections of Shanghai Library contain abundant historical materials about Huizhou merchants' economy during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, providing valuable data for research on the dominant Huizhou merchant economy of that era. Application Value of the Data Product The Catalog is a comprehensive catalog of extant Chinese genealogies collected both domestically and overseas, with its core characteristic lying in its comprehensiveness. It not only reflects the collection status of individual genealogies, but more importantly, presents the overall distribution of Chinese genealogies nationwide, which determines its high application value. It has reversed the long-standing low utilization rate of genealogical materials caused by restrictions such as the inaccessibility of genealogies to outsiders for centuries, ending the semi-closed state of genealogical resource access and meeting the diverse needs of users. The compilation of the Catalog inherits, develops, and innovates the genealogical bibliography work carried out throughout history, especially in the past half century. It is the result of active participation, collective collaboration and selfless dedication of nearly 600 genealogical collection institutions at home and abroad, more than 1,000 compilers of the Catalog, and a large number of private genealogical collectors. The Catalog boasts multiple advantages including a large number of entries, comprehensive coverage of surnames, rich description items and convenient retrieval. It has far-reaching significance for inheriting Chinese national culture, enhancing the root-seeking and ancestral worship sentiments of overseas Chinese and compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and strengthening the cohesion of the Chinese nation. Meanwhile, it promotes research in both social and natural sciences. Other Contents of the Data Product 1) Most Comprehensive Collection: It fully reveals the basic status of Chinese genealogical collections in various regions at home and abroad, making it the thematic catalog with the largest number of collected Chinese genealogies to date. In terms of collection distribution, it covers most provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across China including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as more than 10 overseas countries. 2) Wide Coverage of Surnames: It comprehensively reflects the surname distribution of extant Chinese genealogies. The Catalog includes 608 surnames, covering most of the surnames listed in the *Hundred Family Surnames*, a classic Chinese primer for surnames, with an additional 168 surnames beyond those included in the primer. 3) Rich Description Items and Complete Format: As an abstract catalog, it not only records basic items such as the title of the genealogy, responsible person, edition year, number of volumes, but also compiles information about the family's founding ancestor, first migrating ancestor, migration route, historical celebrities, and reveals the characteristics and valuable materials in the genealogy, striving to provide more useful information for readers. 4) Extended Time Span with the Most Recent Collection Dated to 2003: Breaking the long-standing convention of previous genealogical catalogs, it includes newly compiled genealogies published after 1949, and all genealogies published in 2003 are fully recorded. It not only provides a large amount of new family information for researchers and readers, but also plays a positive role in promoting cultural exchanges at home and abroad. 5) Multiple Indexes for Convenient Retrieval: Six indexes are attached after the Catalog, namely: Provincial Geographic Index, Title Index, Compiler Index, Hall Name Index, Ancestor Index, and Celebrity Index. Additional Information In May 2001, the "Catalog of Chinese Genealogies" submitted by Shanghai Library was approved as the National Social Science Fund Project for the 10th Five-Year Plan by the National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences (approval number: 01EZS001), marking the official launch of the Catalog project. In December 2008, it was officially published and distributed globally by Shanghai Classics Publishing House. This catalog is a key publishing project under the National 11th Five-Year Plan for Publishing, and was rated as "Excellent" by the Expert Committee of the National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences. Following its publication, the Catalog won multiple domestic awards, including the Second China Publishing Government Award for Books (a national-level honor) in January 2011.
