Alveolar macrophages (AMs) play an essential role in immune surveillance within the lung, balancing immune responses to avoid unnecessary inflammation. However, the sophisticated control of local environment on AM functionality remains incompletely understood. Here, we found that EI24 in AMs was essential for their homeostasis but inhibited their phagocytosis and inflammatory responses via metabolic and epigenetic control.
