The male-borne evolutionary lineages currently found in Southern Italy are a blend of incoming types onto a local Paleo/Mesolithic background: the inputs involved lineages produced during the Middle-Eastern early-Neolithic molecular radiation associated with the agricultural revolution and arrived 9 ky ago, and those arrived from the Greek motherland (3 ky ago) and specifically grown in Magna Graecia. We already showed that MSY haplogroup J is an appropriate lineage to mark East-to-West population movements in the Northern Mediterranean (Di Giacomo et al. 2004). Our ultimate goal is to estimate the relative proportion of lineages from each of the above sources, by dissecting and dating the phylogeny of MSY haplogroup J, and hence separating the genetic inputs of the last 10 ky.
