Penicillium species in section Lanata-divaricata are common soil-inhabiting fungi, but their presence in acidic soil has rarely been investigated.. Five xerotolerant new species of Penicillium from soils

Working with soil samples from México and Spain, several Penicillium species were found. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS, BenA, CaM and rpb2 sequences showed that these fungi belonged to Penicillium section Lanata-Divaricata and section Torulomyces. In this study we propose five new species of Penicillium, Penicillium melanosporum, Penicillium xerotolerans, Penicillium michoacanense and Penicillium sp. 4 in the section Lanata-Divaricata and Penicillium sexualis in the section Torulomyces.
