Carbonate Chemistry and Measured pCO2 from Glacial Meltwater-Seawater Mixing Experiments

The accelerating melt of the Greenland Ice Sheet is releasing large volumes of freshwater into the coastal ocean, diluting seawater alkalinity and weakening the ocean’s buffering capacity. A controlled mixing experiment simulating glacial meltwater–seawater interactions reveals the mechanisms behind the persistently low pCO2 measured over the past 15 years. These findings highlight the underappreciated capacity of meltwater to amplify the impact of biologically driven changes on coastal CO2 dynamics.
