Illuminating the multiple-orbital nature in La3Ni2O7 using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering under pressure

This proposal seeks to illuminate 1) the nature of electronic structure and 2) the signatures of CDW/SDW order in single crystals of La3Ni2O7 under pressure. Single crystals of La3Ni2O7 attract extensive attention of the whole materials science community due to its maximum superconductivity transition temperature above 77 K under pressures between 14.0 − 43.5 gigapascals [1], most recently. This proposal will use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at Ni K edge to extract the multiple-orbital nature of La3Ni2O7 and illuminate the phase diagram of it under pressure. Complemented with exact diagonalization calculations, these results will give us valuable information regarding the nature of the electronic structure that the high-temperature superconductivity emerges from in La3Ni2O7.
