Isothermal Compressibility and Isobaric Thermal Expansion of Liquid trans-1,2-Dichloroethene at Low Temperatures

In the present study the density of trans-1,2-dichloroethene within a pressure range up to 150 bar and temperature down to -26 °C was determined by X-ray radiography. From that data the thermal expansion behavior of trans-1,2-dichloroethene and its dependence on pressure and temperature was derived. No indication for a liquid-liquid phase transition thought to occur at -16 °C was found. It was demonstrated that X-ray radiography is a useful and convenient tool for studying the density of liquids at high pressures in a broad range of temperatures.
