Psilocybin is a hallucinogen derived from tryptophan and produced by multiple gilled mushroom species. The spotty phylogenetic distribution led us to hypothesize that psilocybin production may have resulted from horizontal gene transfer. Three psilocybin-producing mushrooms were sequenced to discover genes and understand the evolution of psilocybin production.
