Streptomyces rimosus produces the important antibiotic oxytetracycline. Genetic instability is a problem in the production strains. MV9 is a representative of a class of mutants arising in genetic instability, which no longer produce oxytetracycline. It appears to have a large deletion in the chromosome including the oxytetracycline cluster, but the "deleted" sequences are still present in the mycelium at a copy number of about 0.001. The aim of this study is to understand the DNA rearrangements responsible for this sort of industrially significant genetic instability.
