Orthognathic surgery effect of orofacial sensitivity in individuals with cleft lip and palate

ABSTRACT: Purpose: to investigate the occurrence of changes in the orofacial sensitivity and the recovery time after the orthognathic surgery performance in individuals with cleft lip and palate. Methods: after the approval of the Research Ethics Committee, we started the study which analyzed the myofunctional orofacial reports, performed before and after orthognathic surgery from 2012 to 2014. We selected 53 medical records of patients who underwent sensitivity testing, aged between 18 and 40 years old, from both genders (57% male and 43% female). The sensitivity test was applied on the lips, tongue, incisive papilla and mental region, using the esthesiometer (Semmes-Weinstein), prior to surgery (2 to 3 days) and after surgery (3 to 6 months/9 to 12 months). The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics to verify the frequency of sensitivity change and comparisons were performed by Wilcoxon and Chi-square tests (p
