Abstract:
In Rabindranath Tagore’s literary vision, nature is not merely an external spectacle, but a living, conscious emblem of impermanence—within which he discovers the silent music of the universal soul and the echoes of the human spirit. In his poems, stories, essays, and speeches, nature becomes a confluence of aesthetic consciousness, moral philosophy, and ecological awareness. This study explores how, beneath the poetic imagery of works such as ‘Balai’, ‘Dui Pakhi’, ‘Arogya’, and ‘Brikkha-Ropon’, lies a subtle environmental philosophy—where every atom of nature, every tree, bird, and river becomes a companion in life, a collective expression of the soul.
Tagore’s love for nature is not mere romanticism, but a wise protest—against the currents of inequality, greed, and mechanization that flow through both the inner and outer worlds. In his view, the human relationship with nature is not only economic, but also a profound spiritual responsibility. As he once remarked, “The hallmark of civilization lies not in cruel exploitation of nature, but in accepting it with reverence.” (Source unknown) This perspective calls upon us to perceive nature not as a consumable object, but as a being with whom we coexist.
This research paper analyzes the environmentally sensitive aspects of Rabindranath’s literature and re-evaluates them in the context of the current ecological crisis. Consequently, Tagore’s philosophy emerges as a contemporary directive—where to love nature is regarded as the highest endeavor for the preservation of humanity itself.

Introduction:
The history of human civilization is a continuous exercise in coexisting with nature. This coexistence has at times taken the form of profound kinship, and at other times, that of hostile domination. Yet, within the realms of art, literature, and philosophy, nature has always remained a singular and sublime source of inspiration. This exploratory research paper presents a literary arrangement of Rabindranath Tagore’s aesthetic, philosophical, and ecologically conscious perspectives on nature.
Tagore’s conception of nature is not confined to mere romanticism or pastoral delight. He perceived nature as a living entity—wherein poetic imagery such as “the earth is breathing” embodies the pulse of an eternal time. In his literary universe, nature is not merely a backdrop; rather, it is a companion in the revelation of the innermost mysteries of the human soul. The intimate acquaintance with nature that he developed in places like Shilaidaha and Santiniketan, or through his letters, constitutes a unique cultural treasure of Bengali consciousness.
This paper analyzes the evolution and significance of nature and ecological awareness as reflected in Tagore’s thought, illustrated through diverse examples in his poetry, prose, letters, and plays. ......
