Viruses and other pathogens can diverge in their evolved host-use strategies, due to exposure to different host types and conflicts between within-host reproduction and between-host survival. Most host-pathogen studies have emphasized the role of intra-host reproduction in the evolution of pathogen virulence, whereas the role of extra-host survival has received less attention. Here we examined the evolution of free-living virion survival in RNA virus populations differing in their histories of host-use. To do so, we used lineages of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) that were experimentally evolved in laboratory tissue culture for 100 generations on cancer-derived cells, non-cancerous cells, or alternating passages of the two host types. We observed that free-living survival improved when VSV populations specialized on human cancer-derived (HeLa) cells, whereas this trait was not associated with selection on non-cancer cells or combinations of the cell types. We attributed this finding to shorter-lived HeLa monolayers and/or rapid cell-to-cell spread of viruses on HeLa cells in tissue culture, both of which could select for enhanced virus stability in between host-cell replenishment. We also showed evidence that increases in virion survival were associated with decreases in virulence, suggesting a trade-off between survival and virulence for the VSV populations on one cell type. Our results shed new light on the causes and consequences of "sit and wait" infection strategies in RNA viruses.

MNIST
The MNIST database (Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology database) is a large collection of handwritten digits. It has a training set of 60,000 examples, and a test set of 10,000 examples. It is a subset of a larger NIST Special Database 3 (digits written by employees of the United States Census Bureau) and Special Database 1 (digits written by high school students) which contain monochrome images of handwritten digits. The digits have been size-normalized and centered in a fixed-size image. The original black and white (bilevel) images from NIST were size normalized to fit in a 20x20 pixel box while preserving their aspect ratio. The resulting images contain grey levels as a result of the anti-aliasing technique used by the normalization algorithm. the images were centered in a 28x28 image by computing the center of mass of the pixels, and translating the image so as to position this point at the center of the 28x28 field.

Simulation of rear wheel steering in a vehicle towing a single axle trailer with variable load distribution
This is the dataset for a publication on the stability of automotive vehicles when towing single axle trailers. The loading of the trailer is critical for stability, if the load distribution is too far back, then the trailer will begin to sway uncontrollably, dictating the track of the vehicle.In this research, small proportional control of the rear wheel steering of a larger towing vehicle is shown to be able to further stabilize the system easily, thus improving the safety margin. This is based on control measurements of the yaw angle, either directly measured or inferred from rear camera / parking sensor measurements.The simulation environment is Simulink and all scripts are included to initialise and plot the results. The work is based on the built in example "Two axle vehicle towing one axle trailer" with modifications to enable control algorithms for rear wheel steering control and variable load distribution.
