This dataset is sourced from data generated during the preparation and characterization of geometrically distorted iron-based single-atom catalysts for acidic proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). It was established based on the research background of advancing hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells and developing cathode oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with high activity and stability. The d-SA-FeNC carbon-based catalyst developed in this work is specifically targeted for use as an ORR catalyst in hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells. In this work, we report a simple yet effective strategy for synthesizing geometrically distorted single iron-site catalysts (d-SA-FeNC) through the pyrolysis of Fe-containing zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) assisted by trace NaCl coatings. Benefiting from the prominently exposed Fe-N4 active sites and the enhanced mass transfer enabled by its hierarchical porous structure, the newly developed catalyst demonstrates improved ORR performance in acidic media. This dataset primarily documents various physicochemical structural characterizations of the catalyst, its electrocatalytic activity and stability in acidic media, as well as its performance when integrated into proton exchange membrane fuel cell devices. This work offers valuable guidance for the development of high-performance ORR catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells and provides beneficial explorations for the advancement of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells. The total size of this dataset is approximately 273 MB.
