Molecular resources are important for implementing genomic approaches to address evolutionary and ecological questions. Two strains of the water flea species, D. pulicaria, were sequenced and reference-assembled against the genome of a sister species, Daphnia pulex. These two strains demonstrate a differential response to the toxic cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa.
