Echinococcus granulosus is a member of the Cyclophyllidea, which comprise the majority of tapeworms that are of medical importance. Larval stages of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, and the related Taenia solium, cause the serious and life-threatening diseases cystic echinococcosis and neurocysticercosis, respectively. E. granulosus has a worldwide distribution; the related E. multilocularis, for which a genome sequence is being produced, has a limited distribution within the Northern Hemisphere. The draft genome of E. granulosus will be used in comparative studies with related specied (e.g. E. multilocularis).. This data is part of a pre-publication release.
