However, the use of this resource results in the accumulation of toxic and non-recyclable products, the generation of chronic diseases, and pollution that negatively impact aquatic and terrestrial environments. Strains isolated from petroleum industry environments may possess genes associated with the degradation of benzoate, fluorobenzoate, terephthalate, chlorobenzene, naphthalene, xylene, nitrotoluene, toluene, ethylbenzene, styrene, and other aromatic compounds. These microorganisms with metabolic potential for degradation and removal of these compounds from the environment represent a tool to contribute to bioremediation strategies.
