Sphingobium sp. strain PNB is a metabolically versatile PAH degrader. Originally isolated from polluted soil, it showed a novel phenanthrene degradation pathway. In addition to phenanthrene, the strain also completely degrades naphthalene and biphenyl and incompletely anthracene. It transformed other PAH like pyrene, benzopyrene, acenaphthene into less toxic products. The organization of phenanthrene degrading genes was deduced.
