Kilometres of main tracks by type, short or continuous welded rail (CWR) Thanks to technical progress in manufacturing and the experience gained in track laying, the length of the rails has been steadily increasing. Electric end-to-end welding makes it possible to manufacture longer rails (originally 54 m and later LRS "long welded rails" with a length of up to 300 m).
