This dataset consists of weekly averaged satellite-retrieved data on Northern Hemisphere snow and sea ice cover, provided by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), and is formatted as Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grid (EASE-Grid) equal-area grid data with a spatial resolution of 25 km × 25 km. The latest version, Version 3.1, is a merged dataset of snow and sea ice cover covering the period from October 3, 1966 to June 24, 2007, while the sea ice component of the dataset only spans the timeframe from October 23, 1978 to June 24, 2007. This is the first satellite-observed snow-sea ice cover dataset available for the period with valid observational records. Its snow cover data is derived from digitized weekly NOAA-NESDIS snow charts, which were calibrated by D. Robinson from Rutgers University, and then interpolated onto the EASE-Grid. The original NOAA-NESDIS weekly snow charts were initially developed based on manual interpretation of visible spectral band satellite observations from AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer), GOES, and other satellite sensors. The sea ice cover data is generated from passive microwave sea ice concentration data acquired by Nimbus-7 SMMR (Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer) and DMSP SSM/I (Special Sensor Microwave Imager), which were then interpolated onto the EASE-Grid. This dataset is intended to facilitate research on seasonal oscillations of Northern Hemisphere snow and sea ice cover, as well as other relevant studies. It also provides monthly climatological distributions, frequency distributions, and variance distributions of the corresponding variables.
