Tephrabase is a database of tephra layers found in Iceland, north-west Europe and central Mexico. Tephra refers to all of the solid material produced from a volcano eruption. The study of tephra layers from present and past volcanism is an important contribution to research on the impact of volcanic activity on climate change. The study of tephra layers can also be used a chronological tool (tephrochronology).
The Tephrabase database contains tephra and volcanic data and information from Iceland, north-west Europe and central Mexico (geochemical data not available yet from Mexico). The Tephrabase database can be queried by spatial distribution, temporal coverage, geochemical characteristics, and by particular eruption. The database covers data from the Quaternary (post 20ka BP) to the present.
